Ariful Islam’s Journey: A Growing Passion for Hematology

I began my medical career at Dhaka Medical College, graduating with the K69 cohort in 2017. Those early years shaped my foundation, followed by two years of Internal Medicine training in Bangladesh, where I learned the discipline, compassion, and curiosity that continue to guide me today. In 2023, I completed both the MCPS in Internal Medicine and the MRCP, important milestones that opened the door to new opportunities and broader horizons.

My interest in Hematology emerged during an eight-month posting at a corporate hospital. I was captivated by the speciality’s depth—its diagnostic precision, the diversity of conditions, and the rapidly evolving treatment landscape. What started as a rotation quickly transformed into a genuine passion.

Two years ago, I joined the NHS, committed to building a strong portfolio for alternative competency sign-off. This period has been one of growth and continuous learning. Attending the British Society for Haematology Conference further strengthened my desire to pursue a career in the field. Around the same time, I had the privilege of presenting a team poster at the Society of Acute Medicine Conference, which was awarded Highly Commended—a moment of pride and motivation.

Quality improvement has also played an important role in my journey. A recent QIP on blood transfusion practice led to meaningful change within the hospital, reinforcing my belief that small, thoughtful interventions can make a significant impact on patient care.

I owe much of my progress to the people around me.

My family has been the constant source of strength throughout every challenge and achievement. I have also been fortunate to receive guidance from many supportive seniors and mentors, from internship days all the way through portfolio building and training interview preparation.

Looking ahead, I aspire to complete CCT in Haematology in due course. I hold particular interest in Bone Marrow Transplant, Cellular Therapy, and contributing to hemato-oncology research. I am excited for the path ahead and the opportunity to continue growing within a field I truly love.
