Dr Nadia Islam’s career reflects a deep commitment to advancing women’s health through clinical excellence, research innovation, and leadership in medical education. Now a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, she exemplifies how dedication, academic rigour, and collaboration can drive meaningful change across healthcare services.
A Global Academic Journey
Dr Islam began her medical career at Dhaka Medical College, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2011. She went on to complete her FCPS Part 1 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2013 before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue postgraduate study.
Awarded a fully funded scholarship at the University of Nottingham, she completed a Master of Medical Science (M.MedSci) in Assisted Reproduction Technology, graduating top of her cohort with distinction. Her passion for reproductive science led her to undertake a PhD in Reproductive Medicine, focusing on cryopreservation of gametes and ovarian tissue, with particular emphasis on molecular and hormonal markers of tissue viability. Her research has since been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at major conferences, including ESHRE and the UK Fertility Conference.
Clinical Expertise and Training
Since entering the UK Obstetrics and Gynaecology training programme in 2018, where she ranked 10th nationally, Dr Islam has gained extensive experience across multiple NHS hospitals. She completed the MRCOG during her training and was awarded her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), with advanced modules in Advanced Labour Ward Practice and Subfertility/Reproductive Health. Notably, she is the only Bangladeshi trainee in the North West Deanery to have completed advanced training in fertility.
Dr Islam’s clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of obstetrics and gynaecology. She is proficient in managing both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, including independent management of complex caesarean sections, instrumental deliveries, and external cephalic version (ECV). She recently led a multidisciplinary response to a major obstetric haemorrhage, coordinating care across obstetrics, anaesthetics, and midwifery.
In gynaecology, she performs a wide range of diagnostic and operative hysteroscopies using modern systems such as TruClear, MyoSure, and Movasure. She independently conducts pelvic ultrasound scanning and has developed significant laparoscopic experience, including salpingectomy, cystectomy, adhesiolysis, and treatment of early-stage endometriosis. She intends to pursue further subspecialty training in advanced laparoscopic surgery, particularly in complex endometriosis and fertility preservation.
Innovation and Service Development
Throughout her career, Dr Islam has been instrumental in developing and improving fertility services. At North Manchester General Hospital, she established a structured follicular tracking service for ovulation induction monitoring — introducing new standard operating procedures, training programmes, and patient information pathways to ensure a safe, efficient, and evidence-based service.
She also led the restoration of the service after staffing challenges, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to sustainable care delivery. Similar work at Tameside Hospital included restarting the HSG service and leading independent fertility clinics, further highlighting her dedication to improving access to reproductive health services.
Dr Islam has also led several quality improvement and governance projects, including a PLGF-based screening initiative for pre-eclampsia and a PSIRF review following a complex obstetric haemorrhage. Her work reflects a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and system-level learning.
Leadership and Education
Leadership and teaching are central to Dr Islam’s professional ethos. She currently serves as the Departmental Teaching Lead at Tameside General Hospital (2024–2025) and previously held the same role at Bolton Hospital. She designs structured educational programmes aligned with RCOG curriculum outcomes, delivers simulation training, and mentors trainees through clinical and academic milestones.
In addition to her NHS teaching commitments, Dr Islam has supervised Master’s students at the University of Nottingham, facilitated multidisciplinary PROMPT training, and co-organised MRCOG Part 3 preparation courses. These contributions underline her passion for education and her ability to inspire future generations of doctors.
As PMRT and rota lead at North Manchester General Hospital, Dr Islam continues to demonstrate her ability to lead teams effectively. Her collaborative approach ensures high standards of care and fosters a supportive environment for colleagues and trainees alike.
Research and Recognition
Dr Islam’s research in reproductive medicine continues to influence her clinical practice. Her presentations at international meetings — including those in Finland, Geneva, and Barcelona — have been widely recognised for their scientific merit. She has also received several accolades, including the North Manchester BEE Award for Leadershipand commendations for academic and clinical excellence during her training.
Looking Forward
Combining expertise in clinical care, reproductive science, and service innovation, Dr Nadia Islam represents a new generation of clinician-scientists driving progress in women’s health. Her career journey — from Dhaka to Manchester — illustrates how determination, scholarship, and teamwork can create lasting impact across clinical, academic, and educational spheres.
As she continues to advance fertility and reproductive health services, Dr Islam remains committed to promoting excellence in patient care, supporting colleagues, and shaping the future of obstetrics and gynaecology
