The true foundation of Dhaka Medical College began in 1946, following the partition of India. Virgin, head of the establishment committee, became the first principal, overseeing the initial four departments: medicine, surgery, gynecology, and otolaryngology (ENT).

In its nascent stages, Dhaka Medical College faced challenges, such as the absence of dedicated anatomy and physiology departments. Initially, students attended classes at Mitford Medical School but soon welcomed prominent professors to their faculty. The college also lacked basic facilities like lecture halls and dissection galleries, prompting the construction of new academic buildings in 1955.

Growth and Expansion

The college has experienced significant growth over the decades. While male students were accommodated in Dhaka University’s student halls, female students faced challenges in securing housing. To address these issues, the college expanded its premises, building temporary sheds and later dedicated dormitories. Major milestones in its expansion included:
